Yin Yoga is a practice rooted in Daoist philosophy, targeting the body's connective tissues, such as fascia, ligaments, joints, and bones. It's distinguished by its slower pace, with poses held for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing for a deep release and activation of the body’s meridian pathways, similar to the principles found in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The yin practice goes beyond physical flexibility and joint health and is intended to enhance the flow of chi (life force energy) through the meridians, the pathways in the body through which energy flows. These meridians are connected to our organs and systems, and by stimulating these pathways, Yin Yoga supports the balancing of energy according to TCM principles.
In a typical 75-minute class, you will practice a series of poses focusing primarily on the lower body - such as the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. The extended hold times not only challenge the body’s physical limits but also encourage mental and emotional introspection and tranquility, reflecting the Daoist emphasis on harmony and balance.
While the practice includes the use of props to aid or deepen poses, the objective is not full support but rather to explore the spaces of resistance and surrender, balancing effort with ease. This exploration and the practice’s emphasis on stillness align with Yin Yoga’s philosophical roots, offering a pathway to inner balance and a deeper connection with the self.
Yin Yoga classes proceed at a thoughtful pace, creating space to reflect inwardly and connect with the subtle movements of energy within your body.
